5 Essential Tips for 11+ Summer Holiday Prep (Without the Burnout!)

The summer holiday is in full swing! But if you are the parent of a Year 5 child, you know that this summer is a little bit different. With the 11+ exams looming in September, the coming weeks are a crucial final stretch.

At 11 Plus Prep School, we know that balancing summer fun with serious exam preparation can feel like walking a tightrope. You want your child to be fully prepared and confident, but you also want them to enjoy a well-deserved break.

The good news? You can achieve both. Here are our top 5 tips for managing 11+ prep during the final summer weeks leading up to the September exams.

1. Ditch the Cramming: Stick to a Realistic Routine

At this stage, marathon 6-hour study sessions will do more harm than good. Instead, focus on the "little and often" approach. Aim for 1 to 2 hours of focused study time per day, preferably in the morning when your child’s mind is fresh. Once their daily prep is done, they have the rest of the day to relax, play, and just be a kid. Consistency builds confidence much better than last-minute cramming!

2. Focus on the "Sticky" Subjects

It is human nature to want to practice what we are already good at—it feels rewarding! However, these final weeks are the time to tackle the tricky topics head-on. Whether it’s 3D spatial reasoning, complex algebra, or tricky vocabulary, identify your child's weakest areas and dedicate specific sessions to mastering them.

3. Practice Under Exam Conditions

Knowledge is only half the battle; time management is the other. Many children struggle simply because they aren't used to the strict time limits of the actual 11+. Use this summer to do timed, full-length mock papers. Make sure they are working in a quiet room with no distractions. This helps remove the "fear of the unknown" and teaches them how to pace themselves so they don't panic on exam day.

4. Keep Reading (For Fun!)

Reading doesn't feel like studying, but it is one of the most powerful ways to prepare for the English and Verbal Reasoning sections. Encourage your child to read a variety of high-quality fiction and non-fiction daily. Have them keep a "vocabulary journal" where they write down one or two new, challenging words they discover each day.

5. Prioritize Rest and Celebrate Small Wins

A stressed brain doesn't absorb information well. It is absolutely vital that your child gets plenty of sleep, outdoor exercise, and screen-free downtime. Celebrate their hard work and effort, not just their practice paper scores. Building their self-esteem and keeping their anxiety low is just as important as knowing their times tables.

Let’s Cross the Finish Line Together!

The final weeks before the 11+ don't have to be a nightmare. With a solid plan, a positive mindset, and the right resources, your child can walk into the exam hall in September feeling prepared and proud.
