11+ Synonyms and Antonyms - Avoiding a Common Mistake

A common mistake made by many 11+ candidates when finding synonyms they will often choose conceptually related words as synonyms. For example, they might choose "lifting" and "elevator" as synonyms, even though the first is a verb and the second is a noun. Rather, 11+ candidates need to know that synonyms (and, indeed, antonyms) should be matched for word class: a noun can only be a synonym of another noun; an adjective can only be an antonym of another adjective, and so on.
